An entry down below featured a few photos of a member's equestrian backpiece and I became curious...

so! Show me your equestrian tattoos!

Of course, if there is any special meaning to them, we would all love to hear the story.

Ok I know this isn't the question and answer community. But I have to ask, (well maybe not HAVE to but still ). Ok I have used frontline plus on all my pets for years, but I have noticed lately that it isn't as effective. I had a friend who told me the same thing. so my question is flea related, besides flontline what is the best flea control can I use? also has anyone ever used flea control to kill the fleas in the grass? my mom lives infront of a green belt and I don't know if that is part of the issue but she even with topical flea control she seems to have major issues with fleas. Thank you for letting me ask this, when it comes to flea control, I don't want to play hit or miss since a miss can be deadly to  some pets. Just for info I have three cats, one large dog and four rats. mom has two cats and 1 dog she adopted yesterday.

Looking for info on a saddle Jul. 17th, 2009 @ 09:31 am

Does anyone have any information on the Courbette Husar dressage saddle?  I am not coming up with much on my Google searches.   I tried one the other day and it fit my horse very well.  It is not my first choice in saddles, but if it fits, it fits!  My barn owner is looking to sell it and we are not quite sure what it is worth.  It is in okay condition and really needs to be oiled.  The billets are in good shape.  It has some marks on it, but nothing too terrible.
Thank you for any and all information you can provide.

Once more, for your reminding pleasure — tomorrow I’ll be visiting Salem, Oregon, with Team Seattle for a massive signing event of epic awesomeness! And no, I do not overstate the situation, thank you very much.

We’re leaving this afternoon, carpooling down to Portland, shopping and goofing off, then crashing somewhere in town; and then come noon - 2:00 on Saturday, we’ll be be at Escape Fiction Bookstore, 3240 Triangle Dr SE, with Devon Monk.

But between now and then, you can expect relative radio silence from yours truly. I’m fresh out of bed. I still need to take a shower, get dressed, pack, and meet the crew around noon — and we won’t be back until tomorrow night. I do not intend to take a laptop.

I will, however, be bringing my phone.
That means I might Twitter.
Just sayin’.

Okay. Time to hustle.
You guys stay out of trouble while I’m gone.
(Yes, yes. Do as I say, not as I do.)

Okay, this is another rant, but this time I'm doing something about it. Jul. 17th, 2009 @ 10:49 am
[info]shunhuggedme, posting in [info]stupidpetowners
So, some of you may remember that I posted several times about Abby, a pit bull being raised and bred by a moron. Because I don't feel like backtracking to link to those posts, I'll just write about what's gone on this time.

H, used to be a co=worker. She moved to North Carolina because her husband landed himself in prison and she couldn't afford to live by herself with her 4 kids. She took Abby, her female pit bull, with her. Shortly after living there Abby had a litter of mixed pups, most of them died (one of them was actually pulled out of Abby when it got stuck).

After her husband got out of jail, she wanted to move back down here. She called my boss and begged for her job back, and he gave it to her. (She did, at least, do a decent job) But her dog situation got worse.

While in NC, she had gotten a male pit to breed to her female. The male, Jaws, has cropped ears all the way down to his head, and a few scars on the body.

So as soon as Abby comes into heat? They had pups. She has I think between 10-13 puppies this time. H started trying to sell them to ANYONE who would walk by. She was trying to get them out the door as early as 5 weeks! After convincing her that she could go to jail for the puppy lemon law by selling them that young and not getting them their shots, (This is partially true. I think it's just a fine) she waited until they were 7 weeks, and would get the first set of shots for a pup if she sold it. Meaning the remaining puppies still aren't vaccinated.

Her genius husband took one puppy, locked in their laundry room, and keeps it isolated from everyone except him. Why? He wants it to be mean. According to her, he feeds it red meat. Because she believes that red meat will make a dog mean. (Completely ignoring the tons of photos I've shown her of my own dogs eating red, bloody mean)

She has recently been fired from our company; but one of the other co-workers here who knows her outside of work was telling me that the male dog, Jaws, was "stolen" and fought. He is now severely cut up and of course isn't seeing a vet. I asked her who the hell STEALS a dog, FIGHTS it, and returns it. She said she had no clue.

Right. I can guaren-damn-tee you that if that dog was fought, it was H's husband that did it, for money.

I've had it. Because she came back to work here I have more information on her this time, so I called animal control today and reported her for possible dog fighting. I mentioned the cut up dog, the cropped ears, the isolated pups, I still didn't have her address, but I gave vehicle descriptions and license plate numbers - so I HOPE something gets accomplished.

Hey guys, thought it was about time for me to post something new. ;)

So, this time, me and my usual partner in crime - aka my mom - decided to go on a little car trip around our hometown. Mind you, I live in what my dad and most historians like to call "deep Portugal". You know, far from those funky beaches where everything's been built to look like some sort of resort instead of a real country.

This, ladies and gents, is the real Portugal, as sad as it may be to admit it.

Politics; Judge Sotomayor's "performance"... Jul. 17th, 2009 @ 07:54 am
[info]ozarque
I've been listening to Patrick Buchanan and Chris Mathews ranting and raving on a shared theme: That there's no way Judge Sonia Sotomayor could just be sitting there being herself, that her testimony is a carefully-orchestrated "performance" designed to keep us from seeing the real Judge Sonia Sotomayor.

That is: There's no way a woman could possibly be genuinely eloquent, and overwhelmingly well-informed, and rational, and reasonable, and moderate in her speech, and courteous, and able to follow -- and respond to -- every thread of an argument without losing track of even a tendril. No woman, not even one with the most impressive record of achievements, could do that genuinely, as her "real" self. The only possible explanation is that she has been endlessly trained and rehearsed and drilled by handlers and is just "performing" -- just parroting memorized lines.

I wasn't surprised to hear this from Patrick Buchanan, who is likely to have a nervous breakdown when Sotomayor is confirmed. I was surprised to hear it from Chris Mathews, who is usually more politically savvy than that, although he certainly lost it many times when he was talking about Hillary Clinton. Mathews has to know how sexist his statements are, and being perceived as a sexist isn't part of his own personal "performance" strategy.

In my [very old-womanly] opinion, the position Buchanan and Mathews are taking isn't worth getting angry about; it's only worth pity. As in "those two poor little boys, carrying on like that, making fools of themselves in public."

Hunter flat class help? Jul. 16th, 2009 @ 11:02 pm
[info]greenbirds, posting in [info]equestrian
I find myself in need of the wisdom of the Equestrian hivemind!

You see, I'm mostly a dressage rider (*points at icon*). When I did show hunters, once upon a time, it was pretty much only o/f because both of the horses I leased to show HATED the flat classes. This is not normally a problem, except a couple of my barnmates talked me into going with them to a smallish local h/j show this weekend and taking my pony in some flat classes. I'm not looking to become an instant blue-ribbon winner; this is mostly a chance to take a little field trip because the pony and I haven't gotten out much yet this show season. Still, I'd rather not go into the ring and look like a complete idiot!

So, wise folk of Equestrian, talk to me about what the judges are looking for in the under saddle classes. How are the Special hunters under saddle different from the Low hunters under saddle? Do you sit the canter, or do it in half-seat? Basically, help a clueless girl out! :) For the record, my pony is perfectly happy to trot/canter around on a long rein and look fabulous doing it, and one of the girls at the barn who regularly does the 'A' circuit hunters has told me several times that she thinks Flynn would be really cute as a hunter.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

[info]piedwick/alidocious says hi, guys!

Nice way to waste your time. I do not adopt animals due to the hoops and loops rescues make you go through in an adoption process. Waste of time to do so and then be treated like junk and lied to because all rescuers think they are gods and that they are the best people for those animals and no one else in the world is. So much easier just spending the extra bit of money by buying from a breeder, pet store... or hell even searching on craigslist.

PS Bosco says HI; he's doing great.

LOL
She goes to BYB breeders, pet stores, and craigslist because she knows she'd never be accepted to adopt from a reputable rescue. And Bosco is probably doing great because he's not with her anymore.

I picked up my new ratties today!

The dumbo rex berk is Benjamin Desperaux. He's a bit shy, but very, very sweet and kind of licky.

I'm still trying to think of a name for the harley self. My friend says he looks like a Harley. I'm still deciding. I could name him Harley, Vincent (Price), Tim Burton, or Edward. He's more outgoing and friendly than his brother, but also very sweet.

They've had a long hot car ride home and flopped down to take a nap in the cool, but now they are starting to get up and explore the Superpet. Iggy and Nonny are aware they are there, and Iggy (boss rat) is interested but so far not anxious. I let everyone have a good sniff through bars.

I'll start formal introductions on Sunday morning after letting everyone get used to their surroundings a bit.

Little Benjamin Desperaux.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone else share their horse with a kid? Or kids? Not as a riding instructor but just...in your free time?

I'm wondering what the liability issues are in that kind of situation, where you're not part of a therapeutic riding program, you're not charging money for lessons (and don't have insurance as an instructor), but just occasionally share your horse with other people (mostly kids).

Does anyone else know?

I'm doing coyote totem bottle pendants again. Real raw coyote fur collected from live coyotes at the Indiana Coyote Rescue Center, stuffed into a glass bottle with a cork, and strung on a black leather cord with a real coyote tooth. Portion of proceeds from the sale of these goes to the coyotes at the center who donated their fur.

Here is one immediately available for purchase at my shop here.

I can take four more orders, for now. $9, price includes shipping.
1.
2.
3.
4.

I've also been making similarly-themed lynx claw pendants, and stuffing the bottles with fur from my hairy main coon, Merlin. Here is an example of one here. I can make two more of these, with or without bottle of cat fur. $10, price includes shipping.

1.
2.

Also, adding new things to my shop. I'm actually trying to sell off a lot of stuff before I leave the country in September for a month. I need to pay off a credit card bill, and some medical crap before then. I'm not afraid to haggle a bit, so feel free to poke me. And as always, portion of proceeds from sale of anything goes to wildlife charities.

Thanks for looking!

Once more, a lead-in to the metrics: Tonight, 7:00 p.m. at the University District bookstore, Lisa Mantchev will be reading from her brand new book Eyes Like Stars. Team Seattle will be out in force, and there will be merry-making by all and sundry.

Now. Here’s today’s progress on the alternate-history battlefield adventure about a widowed nurse from a Confederate hospital aboard a west-bound train pulled by a Union war engine — now with military intrigue, steampunk Texas rangers, undead political separatists, murderous plots, bushwhackers, bandits, sabotage, and epic scenes of mayhem:

Project: Dreadnought
New Words: 3366 (not bad)
Present Total Word Count: 127,639 words
Goal: 140,000 words

Things Accomplished in Real Life: Day-job ate the morning; spent lots of time on the phone with my old roommate in London; did some housework; wandered over to Subway for lunch rather than mess up kitchen and have to clean it again; that’s pretty much it.

Things Accomplished in Fiction: Yet more zombie-killing. Snarfed ‘em up with a ten-ton snowplow attached to a train.

Reason for Stopping: Need to change clothes/freshen up before leaving for Lisa’s event.

A rat! Jul. 16th, 2009 @ 04:17 pm
[info]black7balloon, posting in [info]ratties
Indeed!
So, two days ago, (I haven't had a chance to post anything yet. ^^; ) I was sitting in my room reading Harry Potter 6, before I went to see the movie at midnight. (good times.) When suddenly my younger sister bursts into the room, yelling "You got a rat! You got a rat!" I frowned at her, completely unsure what she was going on about. "here, come upstairs!" she yells, taking my hand.
Upstairs at the front door was a huge gift-wrapped package, with a large bow ontop. I suspected, and after tearing off the wrapping, I was right.
According to my mom, someone wearing a brown hat, sunglasses, a scarf, gloves, a coat that reached their knees, and boots, came to our front door, left the package, and ran off. Inside, was a small albino female rat.
Now then, don't get me wrong, if I had my way, I would have gotten two rats in an instant. But... I had no idea this was happening, (and all my friends claim it was not them.) so I didn't know I would be getting one rat.
But anyway, I truly do love her! Her name is Ellie. She's very small, (about as big as my hand.) and is all white with pink eyes. She has a huge cage, (not sure what type, but it has three floors and everything's perfect for a little rat.) The first day I took her out and let her run around my room. She isn't skittish, or worried or scared of me. She likes to sniff things, and give a little nibble to everything she sees, before scampering off. She lies to take little pieces of food from my hands, and then hide it under her little bed-like hammock, and eat it there.
Although now that I have a rat, I have several questions for you all.
Aww, I do love my rat. )

Dogs kill cats, owner just laughs!! Jul. 16th, 2009 @ 10:39 pm
[info]trudidoo, posting in [info]stupidpetowners
I was walking to work with a friend today who was telling me about his friend's step dad.
This guy owns several hunting dogs (I'm not sure what kind of dog but they are possibly Terriers of some sort.) and he refuses to walk them on a lead. Wouldn't be a problem except these dogs will chase anything. He even encourages them to chase stuff. Yesterday they caught a cat. The first person to respond to the poor cat's cries was an off duty police officer. He tried to get the dogs to release the cat without success. Then my friend's parents came along and tried to help. At this point the SPO is stood near by, laughing because "It's just a cat. They do this all the time. ". Then he gets even stupider by implying that this isn't the first cat the dogs have attacked and then kicks my friend's mum in the head because she might hurt his dog. SPO is then arrested for assault.
Unfortunately the 15 year old poor cat didn't survive. All I can say is that these were hunting dogs and there is a reason that fox hunting is now banned! The cat owner was inconsolable. Apparently the cat owner had complained about the SPO before.
To make things even worse the step son is now abusing my friend. He's taking the SPO's side and telling my friend that his mum shouldn't have interfered. The worst thing is that the step son had a dog, until the other dogs killed it just like they did this cat. So he knows they are dangerous dogs.
We believe that this means that the dogs will now be PTS. I think it's so unfair as they were only doing what came naturally and what they were told to do. However one of the dogs might be saved as it didn't attack the cat and there is another (possibly a Staff) at this home that for some unknown reason wasn't out walking at the time. And on an even more positive note the SPO is possibly going to be charged under the Dangerous Dogs act so he won't be allowed any dogs.

If there are any requests from pledgers that I'm spacing, let me know. The mulberry and american chestnut posts are there, you just have to go back a few posts in my journal.

From a Q&A forum:

how can i change my standard poodle to a corded poodle

ok so i like the corded look but not sure how to get started. i have read online but i guess i don't understand what they are saying so i need it explained in plainer english. my poodle's hair is fairly fine for now and i have been letting it grow out and so far no matts. but i wondered how do i twist the hair? i mean i would like for her hair to just grow out the way it does and not combine any other hairs to the strands that are already gathered together or do i have to make the locks bigger as in fatter. does this make sense? also should i leave poms poms on rump or shave it all?

Are corded poodles and standard poodles not TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FUCKING BREEDS? I could have sworn they were. The books I looked at this morning told me they were.

Hello, I come to you with a few questions of some urgency.
I'm studying to become an equine dentist at the moment and as part of my research, I figured I would try my luck asking some people on LJ.

It's only a few questions, I would be forever grateful if you could take the time to fill them out. Cookies for those who do!
I am interested in your opinion based on what you have been told by your equine professionals. I don't want to know what your vet or dentist says, I want your opinion on them.

If there is anything in the questions you don't know about/haven't heard of you can skip the question (I will be happy to inform, but I think a quick google can do the same ;-) )

Questions below! )

I have been fascinated by this abandoned train station since I first saw it back in 1997. Tantalisingly hidden in plain sight, the station can be seen from above through it's ventilation shafts in Glasgow's Botanic Gardens. Last weekend a small group of us finally managed to explore it properly.

Something a bit different. Jul. 16th, 2009 @ 07:56 am

I've had an interest in abandoned places for quite sometime and having explored a few locations locally, I started daydreaming about an entire abandoned city, and what it would look like. I think the thought of an entire city devoid of habitation is incredibly interesting and in a way I'm sure all of you can appreciate, incredibly beautiful too. So, armed with a few rolls of film, some patience and a few cups of coffee, I woke up with the sun on a Sunday morning and tried to find my abandoned city. I'm fairly pleased with the results here, and thought you guys might appreciate what came out of my experiment.

The thrown electric trains... For a long time wished to visit, and here I have reached this secluded corner. There was in practice one electric train, but interesting enough. Here and photos therefrom.

Two of my dogs are, for all intents and purposes, outdoor dogs. We're getting a place in the Northeast soon, and I am looking for some sort of shed or very large dog house designed to be comfortable in both hot and cold weather.

Obviously, if there's a blizzard or a heat wave, we'll have to move them inside, but it's my understanding that there are doghouses out there good for both winter and summer weather, and would like to know if anybody has any products that they could recommend.

Architecture monument, by the way. Skilfully constructed wooden lock in that century is more tremendous. Unfortunately, all warped and finished by a carelessness of the authorities to an awful condition. But beauty shaking. By the way, wall-paper on the other hand - front newspapers 1941 years.

Coon bones and bits. And a pair of shiney wings, dried. Plus some older stuff that still needs to sell (prices lowered on those). Unless stated otherwise, these are grab-bag sets and the price includes everything in the picture.

the stuff for sale )

If interested in anything, let me know what and leave your zip code so I can calculate shipping.

Bainbridge Jul. 16th, 2009 @ 01:39 am

This placed used to be the location of Bainbridge Naval Training Center. Bainbridge NTC was in operation from WWII until the 1970s. There used to be over 500 buildings at this site. Once the military abandoned the place they must have went and destroyed all the evidence. The only buildings left on this site were the ones taken over by the Job Corp. We visited 3 out of 4 of those buildings. One of them had no windows so it was too dark for pictures so we skipped that one. There are some other little buildings showing up on a google map but they are literally a half mile away and probably wasn't worth even trying to see them. This place has been ravaged. I'm not even sure by what. There is a lot of natural damage such as the roof caving in from water damage. But all the walls are smashed up like scrappers had been through. It's a strange place for sure.

Does anybody know of any breeders in Florida? Any closeish to Polk county? All the websites I've looked at haven't been updated since anywhere from 2000-2006.
