... this is what one looks like:

Wonder Box #1

Wikipedia can tell you more.

It was fun to make and put to use a lot of eclectic nature junk I've been collecting for the past 20 years. :)

I knew if I started interning at a place like Brad's World Reptiles, I'd end up coming home with something. Lo and behold, one day I'm doing something in the building that houses all the young snakes and Erin points out a row of boxes that are all labeled 'Gifts'. "Want a snake?" she says, "they're free."

Thus, I came to own a baby Honduran milk snake. Her box said 'born in 2005', (I'm guessing late in the year) so she's probably barely 6 months old. And yes, I know for sure she's a female this time as the incredibly knowledgeable Liz has shown me how to sex snakes (no, I can't think of a way of writing that last phrase without it sounding dirty).

I named her Ix Chel, after a Mayan goddess, and she's now living in Monty's old cage, which is ridiculously large for her. She's much more hyper than a ball python, and I definitely miss the slow, almost dreamy way Monty moved around when you took her out of the cage - there's no way I could just put Ix Chel on the floor and let her look around, she's too fast. On the other hand, she's already trained to eat pre-killed mice. I now have a baggie full of dead pinkies* in the freezer (another gift from Liz, yay free stuff!) and it no longer requires a weekly trip to the pet store and careful supervision to feed. Just pull it out, let it thaw, and plop in the cage.

But it didn't end there, oh no. Not long after I brought Ix Chel home, I was back at the internship in the rat house when Liz mentions what great pets rats make. "Why, I've always wanted a pet rat." I say. "Well," Liz replied, "why don't you take one home?"

Thus, I now have not one, but two baby rats.

Curly (she's got the curly hair gene) is about a week younger than Moe and they're both about the cutest thing since sliced bread. Even Kaida thinks so. My pet situation does bring up a moral dilema, though. There will come a point, assuming Moe and Curly live full rat lives, that I will have have them as pets at the same time Ix Chel is big enough to eat rats. Maybe I'll have to feed her in a different room or something.

*Tom's being a good sport about it.
